TOP THINGS OUR CLIENTS LOVE ABOUT THEIR HOME
• Guests always comment on the incredible gardens surrounding the home. The immediate back garden is a wonderful place to relax or eat, with the surrounding maples, cedar and ornamental cherry trees giving you great privacy. Surrounding the home are tons of established lilacs, cherry blossoms, dogwood, clematis, wisteria, peonies, climbing roses and other perennials, plus a fig tree and some berries. It's especially gorgeous in the spring.
• This neighborhood is so wonderful and great for walking. Turn any corner and prepare to be greeted by water views or friendly dog walkers! There are numerous great dining options close by too - my favorites were Bakery Nouveau and Pizza Credo.
• All kinds of amenities are nearby at Alaska and Morgan Junctions - multiple grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, banks, and more are right there.
• The historic, classic craftsman features of the home never go out of style. They're particularly charming in the winter when we plug in the faux fireplace logs for a cozy fireplace.
• Getting downtown is easy with the C-Line bus 2 blocks away - it comes by every 10-15 minutes!
• If you haven't checked out the West Seattle Farmers Market, you need to! It takes place just up the street, year-round on Sundays and you can find a wealth of local produce and treats.
• The raised cedar beds in the backyard garden are wonderful for growing veggies of all kinds. They get tons of great sunlight! I used them for all kinds of plants, and the most northern bed is planted with herbs - chives, thyme, oregano and mint!
• Fabulous Lincoln Park is a short walk away, where you can find great trails, picnic and play areas, and stunning views looking west over the Puget Sound to the Olympic Mountains. The sunsets are incredible from there or nearby Beach Drive, also a short distance away!
• The soaking tub in the primary bathroom is a wonderful place to relax and unwind after busy days - it truly feels like you're at a spa!
• This home's efficient systems and construction lead to low energy bills, even in the coldest parts of winter. Heating bills are affordable while the home stays toasty and comfortable.
The History Behind the Home & Garden
When people walk into the house, they often comment that it’s a “California house.”
Actually, it is a California Style Bungalow; these were designed and built from 1900-1930 and this house is 1922.
Bungalows were made in many styles; the California bungalow was a 1 or 1 ½ story house in the Arts and Crafts architectural style.
They were a miniature of the popular grand Arts and Crafts houses (particularly those of the Greene architects of Pasadena – they did not invent the style but popularized it).
The Arts and Crafts movement is much deeper and comes from England.
The style has a large front porch, wide eaves, street-facing gables, usually painted brown or green.
The door opens into the living room and there is a fireplace, casement windows, arches, and built-ins. Tiles and wood paneling are often featured. Bedrooms usually had white painted woodwork.
Grand Arts and Crafts homes have multiple exterior planes and details (such as bump outs) – this is clear at the back of this house (which my neighbors lovingly call “the villa”).
This is a classic Arts and Crafts bungalow right down to the faux fireplace, which features the Claycraft Potteries “Waterfall” tile pattern (No. 1080) which is authenticated and registered with the Pasadena Museum of History.
Besides the original baseboard and trim, and windows (except the front 2), the house features original lighting, including the 2 sconces above the fireplace and the dining room chandelier that is filled with sand so it can be easily leveled with a shake. T
he bedroom also features polychrome painted brass embossed light fixtures.
Google this and you will see that these fixtures are rare and collectible for preservationists who want to preserve the historic integrity of the house. Floors are hard wood in the living room and fir in the bedroom.
Garden
The second feature people always comment on is the garden.
The immediate back garden is set up for a table to dine; and also a firepit to relax and hang out in cooler times. It has great privacy due to the 2 maples, the Deodara cedar, and the flowering ornamental cherry.
The garden is particularly nice in the spring when the cherry blooms pink, followed by the white dogwood.
Many spring perennials, including tulips come up. The lilacs planted all around the garden bloom from late April to May with the peonies and wisteria clematis and climbing rose bloom over the trellis a little later, usually May. (There are 3 separate clematis which bloom at different times.)
The fig tree has lots of fruit in August. The forsythia and heather bloom in February.
There are a few rose bushes and a trumpet vine that is on the back gate in a container so it doesn’t spread. In the back, the untreated cedar raised beds get sun for vegetables.
The most northern bed is planted in herbs – chives, thyme, oregano and mint. There is also arugula and black currants and raspberries. In the fall the maple is gorgeous.
Chemicals have not been used on the yard or garden so it is safe for pets (doggy door!) or kids.
